Trachten Accessories Guide: Belts, Suspenders, Socks, and Shoes

The accessories are usually what separate a genuine Trachten outfit from a generic costume – the leatherwork, the socks, the shoes. Here's what each piece does and how to choose. See our complete Trachten guide for the full picture.

Suspenders (Hosenträger)

Traditional Lederhosen and Bundhosen are built to be worn with suspenders rather than a belt – they're often embroidered, sometimes with a stag or floral motif, and cross at the chest via a decorative plate on dressier pairs. Suspenders are the more traditional choice and generally the more comfortable one over a long day.

Belts

A leather belt with an engraved buckle is a legitimate alternative to suspenders, especially for a more casual or modern look, and works well if your Lederhosen or Bundhosen has belt loops rather than suspender buttons.

Socks

Wool or wool-blend Trachten socks, usually knee-high, are the traditional choice – they keep the leg warm and finish the look between the trouser hem and the shoe. Solid colors (grey, green, white) are the most versatile.

Shoes: Haferlschuhe

Haferlschuhe are the classic Trachten shoe – sturdy suede leather, side-laced, with a low heel and non-slip sole, designed for standing and dancing over a long festival day. Dark brown or black both work with most Lederhosen and Bundhosen colors.

Hats and the Charivari Chain

A Trachten hat isn't required, but a felt hat with a brush, feather, or pin adds a finishing touch many men like for Oktoberfest. A Charivari – a decorative silver chain traditionally worn across the front flap of the Lederhosen – is a more collector-oriented accessory, often assembled from coins, small charms, or hunting trophies over time rather than bought as a single piece.

Putting It Together

A good rule of thumb: pick one "statement" accessory (embroidered suspenders, a distinctive belt buckle, or a Charivari chain) and keep the rest simple, so the outfit doesn't feel over-decorated.
